Imagination and reality use different rules

Drama and documentary can both create powerful stories, but they begin from different promises to the audience. Drama constructs a world through a script and performance. Documentary starts from real people, events or subjects and shapes that reality into a clear narrative without pretending it is fiction.

How drama production works

Drama gives the creative team greater control. Scenes can be written, rehearsed and repeated. The director plans performances, blocking, lighting, art direction and camera movement to achieve a specific emotional result. Continuity between shots is carefully managed in the edit.

How documentary production works

Documentary crews must prepare thoroughly while staying ready for the unexpected. Interviews, observation, archive material and real locations may all contribute to the story. The director cannot always repeat a moment, so the team must make fast decisions while respecting accuracy, consent and context.

Where the two forms meet

Modern productions often borrow techniques from both forms. A documentary may use cinematic lighting and carefully designed sequences, while drama may use handheld movement, real locations and natural performances to feel authentic. The difference is not simply visual style; it is the relationship with truth and the expectations created for the viewer.

Choosing the right approach

Use drama when the message needs controlled characters, dialogue and scenes. Use documentary when real testimony, history or observation is the heart of the project. Some branded films use a hybrid approach, but the audience should never be misled about what is real and what has been recreated.

With experience in documentaries, television programmes, branded films and event production, Fady Ragheb Production develops the approach around the story and audience. Contact us to discuss your next project in the UAE.
